Ein Thema präsentieren B1: 5-Folien Structure, Redemittel and 64 Themen

Ein Thema präsentieren is Teil 2 of the Sprechen module in the Goethe-Zertifikat B1, and it is the part candidates dread most. You stand up and talk, alone, for three to four minutes, about a topic you were handed fifteen minutes earlier.
It sounds harder than it is. The presentation follows five fixed slides, always in the same order, and the sentences that move you from one slide to the next are the same whatever the topic. Learn the skeleton once and you only ever have to improvise the content.
Then comes Teil 3, and this is where candidates get caught out. Most preparation material tells you that your partner asks a question. What it leaves out is that the examiner asks one too. Two questions, two different registers, and nobody warns you.
This page gives you the five-slide skeleton with the exact transition sentences, Redemittel for every slide in complete sentences, a full model presentation with audio, the Teil 3 exchange in both its roles, and all 64 Themen with worked examples.
How Teil 2 and Teil 3 work
| Teil 2 | Teil 3 | |
|---|---|---|
| What you do | Present a topic alone | Talk about your topic and your partner’s |
| Duration | About 3 minutes | About 2 minutes |
| Who speaks | You | Your partner, then the examiner |
| Preparation | 15 minutes, notes allowed | None — it’s reactive |
You choose your topic. The sheet offers two, A and B, and you pick one. Spend the first sixty seconds of your preparation deciding — and choose the one you have a personal story for, not the one that sounds more impressive. Folie 2 asks for your own experience, and there is no way to fake it.
You and your partner present different topics, so you go through this twice: once as the speaker, once as the listener who has to ask a question. Teil 3 covers both presentations, which means you are marked on how you engage with a topic you did not prepare.
The five Folien
This is the backbone. Every Goethe B1 presentation follows it.
| Folie | What it asks for | Roughly |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Name your topic and announce your structure | 30 sec |
| 2 | Your own experience of the topic | 45 sec |
| 3 | The situation in your home country | 45 sec |
| 4 | Advantages, disadvantages, your opinion | 90 sec |
| 5 | Close and thank the audience | 15 sec |
Folie 4 is where the marks are. It is longer than the others, it carries the connectors and the subordinate clauses examiners are listening for, and it is the one candidates rush. Budget half your time for it.
The order of Folies 3 and 4 is not rigid. Some model answers put advantages and disadvantages before the home country, and that is fine — you announce your own running order on Folie 1, and the examiner follows it. What is not negotiable is that all five appear. Whichever order you choose, announce it and then stick to it.
The transition sentences that work for any topic
Here is the part almost nobody publishes. We checked the transitions across 64 completed model presentations, and the same sentences carry the structure every time. These are not templates with gaps — they are complete sentences you can say verbatim on any topic.
| Moving to | Say this |
|---|---|
| Folie 1 | Das Thema meiner Präsentation lautet: … |
| In meiner Präsentation geht es um … | |
| Was mich persönlich betrifft, … | |
| Das war meine Präsentation. Haben Sie noch Fragen? |
Memorise those nine sentences and you have roughly 45 seconds of flawless German banked before you know what your topic even is. That is 45 seconds you no longer have to improvise under stress.
One warning: say in meinem Heimatland, not the name of your country, when you rehearse. It keeps the skeleton reusable across every topic.
Redemittel for each Folie
Folie 1 — Introducing the topic
| German | English |
|---|---|
| Das Thema meiner Präsentation lautet: Gesund essen. | The topic of my presentation is: eating healthily. |
| Today I’m going to talk about the topic of vocational training. |
| Über dieses Thema wird heute viel diskutiert. | This topic is much discussed today. |
| Meine Präsentation besteht aus vier Teilen. | My presentation consists of four parts. |
| I chose this topic because it affects me personally. |
Folie 2 — Your own experience
| German | English |
|---|---|
| Jetzt geht es um meine persönlichen Erfahrungen. | Now to my personal experiences. |
| Ich habe damit schon eigene Erfahrungen gemacht. | I’ve already had my own experience with this. |
| At my home it’s very similar. |
| When I was younger, I saw it differently. |
| I have to admit I don’t always manage it myself. |
| I don’t personally have experience with this topic, but a friend of mine … |
The first of those two is worth more than it looks: admitting a limitation sounds like a real person and gives you a dass-clause for free.
The last one is your escape hatch. If you drew a topic you have genuinely never encountered, do not invent an experience — borrow one. Zwar … aber is a solid B1 structure and you have turned an empty slide into a scoring one.
Folie 3 — Your home country
| German | English |
|---|---|
| Now I’d like to talk about the situation in my home country. |
| In my home country the situation is somewhat different from Germany. |
| Bei uns ist es üblich, dass … | Where I come from it’s normal that … |
| Das hat vor allem kulturelle Gründe. | That has above all cultural reasons. |
| In recent years, however, that has changed. |
Folie 4 — Advantages, disadvantages, opinion
| German | English |
|---|---|
| Nun erwähne ich einige Vor- und Nachteile. | Now I’ll mention a few advantages and disadvantages. |
| A big advantage is that you save a lot of time doing it. |
| Dazu kommt, dass es auch billiger ist. | On top of that, it’s also cheaper. |
| On the other hand, there are also disadvantages. |
| The biggest disadvantage, in my opinion, is the price. |
| Man darf allerdings nicht vergessen, dass … | One mustn’t forget, however, that … |
| All in all, the advantages outweigh for me. |
| Meiner Meinung nach sollte man … | In my opinion one should … |
| Ich persönlich finde, dass … | I personally think that … |
Two structures here are worth drilling because they show off B1 grammar without sounding forced: nicht nur … sondern auch and einerseits … andererseits. Use each once and you have demonstrated exactly what the grammar criterion is looking for.
Folie 5 — Closing
| German | English |
|---|---|
| I’m now at the end of my presentation and thank you for your attention. |
| Das war meine Präsentation. Haben Sie noch Fragen? | That was my presentation. Do you have any questions? |
| Damit bin ich am Ende meines Vortrags. Vielen Dank fürs Zuhören. | With that I’m at the end of my talk. Many thanks for listening. |
Never trail off. An unfinished ending is one of the few things examiners genuinely note down.
A model presentation, annotated
Topic: Essen wir zu viele Süßigkeiten? — Do we eat too many sweets?
🔊 Listen to the model presentation
Notice the opening does not begin with the topic. Two sentences of context first, then the announcement. It sounds prepared rather than recited, and it buys you time to settle your voice.
Folie 2 — Eigene Erfahrungen
Concrete and specific. A list of five nouns costs nothing and demonstrates vocabulary range immediately.
Hier isst man viele Süßigkeiten.
The impersonal man carries this whole slide. It is the single most useful pronoun in Teil 2 — it lets you generalise without claiming statistics you don’t have.
Count the grammar in that first paragraph: weil*,* dass*,* nicht nur … sondern auch*,* darum*, plus a modal in* sollte*. That is the whole B1 structures criterion satisfied in four sentences. Then the opinion arrives as a qualified position rather than a slogan — it concedes the medical point before disagreeing with it.*
Folie 5 — Abschluss
Damit bin ich am Ende meines Vortrags. Vielen Dank für Ihre Aufmerksamkeit und fürs Zuhören. Hätten Sie Fragen?
The closing question hands control to Teil 3 deliberately, instead of leaving an awkward silence.
Teil 3 — the part nobody warns you about
After the presentation, two people ask you a question. First your partner, then the examiner. They are not the same kind of question.
Your partner’s question is friendly and usually personal — they have to produce a question of their own, so they will keep it simple. The examiner’s question is the real test: it typically pushes on something you did not cover, or asks you to consider a case you left out.
Here is the same topic continuing:
Notice the answer to the examiner: it takes a clear position, gives a personal reason, and ends with a concession using auch wenn. Short, complete, no waffle.
When you are the listener: asking a good question
You also have to ask your partner a question. Give feedback first, then ask. Feedback alone is not a question, and a question without feedback sounds abrupt.
| German | English |
|---|---|
| Ihr Vortrag war sehr interessant, vielen Dank. | Your talk was very interesting, thank you. |
| Sie haben das Thema sehr klar strukturiert. | You structured the topic very clearly. |
| Ich habe dazu eine Frage an Sie: … | I have a question about it for you: … |
| Sie haben gesagt, dass … Können Sie das genauer erklären? | You said that … Could you explain that in more detail? |
| Wie ist das eigentlich bei Ihnen persönlich? | How is that for you personally, actually? |
| Was würden Sie jemandem raten, der … ? | What would you advise someone who … ? |
The safest question in the exam is the one that asks the speaker to expand on something they already said. It is always relevant and it is impossible to get wrong.
Answering well
| German | English |
|---|---|
| Das ist eine gute Frage. Ich denke, dass … | That’s a good question. I think that … |
| Vielen Dank für Ihre Frage. Meiner Erfahrung nach … | Thank you for your question. In my experience … |
| I’m not entirely sure, but I suspect that … |
| Das kommt darauf an. Wenn … , dann … | That depends. If … , then … |
| Darüber habe ich noch nie nachgedacht. Spontan würde ich sagen … | I’ve never thought about that. Off the cuff I’d say … |
Those last two are your safety net. Das kommt darauf an buys you a full sentence of thinking time and sets up a conditional clause — good grammar and good tactics at once.

Society and lifestyle
Read down the list and one thing becomes obvious: almost every topic is a yes-or-no question about everyday modern life. Should children have phones. Is fast food acceptable. Country or city. That is the entire genre. If you can argue both sides of an ordinary question, you can present any of these.
What to do with the 15 minutes of preparation
You do not have time to write a script, and writing one is a trap anyway — read-aloud text is obvious and scores badly.
- Choose between topic A and B — in sixty seconds. Pick the one where Folie 2 writes itself. Do not deliberate; a worse topic you can speak about beats a better one you cannot.
- Draw the five boxes on your sheet and label them 1 to 5. The structure is now visual and you cannot lose your place.
- Fill Folie 4 first. It is half your talk and the hardest. Two advantages, two disadvantages, one opinion. Keywords only.
- Fill Folies 2 and 3 with one concrete memory and one general observation. Concrete beats clever.
- Do not write Folie 1 or 5. You already know them by heart from the transition sentences above.
- Say the opening out loud once, under your breath. The first fifteen seconds are the only part worth rehearsing.
Five mistakes that cost points
Skipping a Folie. Usually Folie 3, because candidates get absorbed in their own experience. The examiner has the slide list in front of them and ticks them off.
Reading from your notes. Keywords are allowed, sentences are not. If your eyes stay down, pronunciation and interaction both suffer.
Rushing Folie 4. Candidates arrive there with a minute left and compress the richest part of the talk into three sentences. Watch the clock at Folie 3.
Finishing in ninety seconds. A three-minute slot filled in half the time reads as insufficient range. Expand Folie 4 with a second advantage and a concession.
Having no question ready for your partner. You are marked on Teil 3 as a listener too. Write your question down while they present.
Frequently asked questions
How long should the presentation be? About three minutes, per the official Modellsatz, followed by roughly two minutes of Teil 3. Under two minutes is too short to demonstrate range; run long and the examiner will stop you.
Do I get to choose my topic? Yes. You are given two, A and B, and you pick one. Choose on the strength of your Folie 2 — the topic you have a real story about — not on which sounds more sophisticated.
Can I use notes? Yes, keywords on your preparation sheet. Reading full sentences aloud is what costs you marks, not the notes themselves.
What if I don’t know anything about the topic? You don’t need expertise. Folies 2 and 3 ask only for your own experience and your own country — nobody can contradict you. Folie 4 needs two arguments each way, which any ordinary opinion can supply.
Do I have to talk about my real home country? Yes, and it is an advantage. It is the one part of the talk where you are the only expert in the room.
What happens if I go blank mid-presentation? Return to your structure out loud: Nun komme ich zu Vor- und Nachteilen. Announcing the next slide restarts the talk and sounds deliberate rather than lost.
Does my partner’s question get marked? Your question to them does. Prepare it while listening, and give brief feedback before you ask it.
