Goethe B2 Sprechen Teil 2: Diskussion — Structure, Redemittel, 23 Themen

Teil 2 of the Goethe-Zertifikat B2 Sprechen module moves you from the seminar to a debating club. You and your partner get one controversial question and about five minutes to exchange positions on it.
The single most useful thing to understand about this task is what it is not. It is not a debate you win. The examiners are marking interaction, and two candidates who build an argument together score higher than one who dismantles the other. You can disagree completely and still both do well — provided you are listening.
This page gives you the three instructions the task sheet always contains, Redemittel written as complete sentences, a model discussion with audio, and all 23 Themen with worked arguments on both sides.
How Teil 2 works
| Setting | You are in a debating club (Sie sind Teilnehmende eines Debattierclubs) |
| Duration | About 5 minutes for the pair |
| Preparation | 15 minutes covering Teil 1 and Teil 2 together |
| Format | One question, two candidates, opposing or converging positions |
| Help provided | Bullet points (Stichpunkte) on the sheet you may use |
The task sheet gives you a question phrased as a yes-or-no — Sollte man Flugreisen stärker besteuern? — plus a handful of Stichpunkte you can lean on.
The three instructions
Every Teil 2 sheet says the same three things. They are your marking scheme in plain German.
| Instruction | What it means | |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Tauschen Sie Ihren Standpunkt und Ihre Argumente aus | State your position and support it |
| 2 | Reagieren Sie auf die Argumente Ihrer Gesprächspartnerin | Respond to what they actually said |
| Close with an explicit verdict |
Instruction 2 is where most marks are won and lost. A candidate who delivers three prepared arguments without ever referring to their partner has produced a monologue, not a discussion — and the sheet asked for a discussion.
Instruction 3 is the one candidates forget. Five minutes run out, the conversation trails off, and nobody says whether they are for or against. The instruction is printed on the sheet. Say it out loud.
Preparing in five minutes
Your 15 minutes cover both parts, so realistically Teil 2 gets about five. That is enough if you do not try to write speeches.
- Two columns, Pro and Kontra. Three keywords each. Not sentences.
- Decide your side, and write one word. Dafür or dagegen. You can shift during the discussion, but starting undecided wastes your opening.
- Prepare your first sentence in full. It is the only one you will deliver under real pressure.
- Write one argument for the other side too. You will need it when your partner is thin, and conceding a point you already anticipated sounds generous rather than weak.
- Do not plan the whole thing. Three core ideas is the right amount. A scripted discussion cannot respond, and responding is the task.
Redemittel in full sentences
Opening and stating your position
| German | English |
|---|---|
| I’m of the opinion that air travel should be taxed more heavily. |
| Meiner Ansicht nach spricht vieles dafür. | In my view, a lot speaks in favour of it. |
| Ich stehe dieser Frage eher kritisch gegenüber. | I take a rather critical view of this question. |
| Before I justify my position, I’d like to say briefly what’s at stake. |
| I take the position that something has to change here. |
Arguing your side
| German | English |
|---|---|
| A strong argument in favour is that emissions would fall significantly. |
| You can see that clearly from the fact that other countries have already implemented it. |
| On top of that there’s a practical aspect that’s often overlooked. |
| A concrete example from my own circle makes this clear. |
| Nor should we forget that everyone bears the costs in the end. |
Responding to your partner — instruction 2
This is the section that matters most. Every one of these sentences requires you to have listened.
| German | English |
|---|---|
| Da haben Sie einen wichtigen Punkt angesprochen. | You’ve raised an important point there. |
| Have I understood you correctly that you’re calling for an exception for families? |
| I agree with your first argument, but I’m sceptical about the second. |
| That may be true in theory, but in practice it looks different. |
| That’s exactly the point where we differ. |
| I see it differently, for the following reason. |
| The one has little to do with the other. |
| If I follow your thought further, one would conclude that … |
That last one is the strongest move available to you. Taking your partner’s argument and extending it — whether to support or to undermine it — demonstrates comprehension, interaction and complex syntax in a single sentence.
Conceding without surrendering
| German | English |
|---|---|
| I’ll grant you that, but only up to a point. |
| Diesen Einwand kann ich nachvollziehen. Trotzdem bleibe ich bei meiner Position. | I can understand that objection. Nevertheless I stand by my position. |
| You’re right insofar as that would be more expensive in the short term. |
| Ich muss mich an einer Stelle korrigieren. | I need to correct myself on one point. |
Conceding is not a loss of face at B2. Sie haben insofern recht, als … is a correlative construction that examiners specifically listen for.
Taking and yielding the floor
| German | English |
|---|---|
| Darf ich dazu kurz etwas ergänzen? | May I briefly add something to that? |
| Entschuldigung, ich hätte dazu eine Zwischenfrage. | Sorry, I have a quick question about that. |
| Let me just finish the thought. |
| Wie sehen Sie das? | How do you see it? |
| Was würden Sie jemandem entgegnen, der das Gegenteil behauptet? | What would you say to someone who claims the opposite? |
If your partner monopolises, interrupt. Politely, but interrupt. Silence is not scored as courtesy.
Closing — instruction 3
| German | English |
|---|---|
| Let’s sum up: we agree on one point, not on the other. |
| On balance I’m in favour, though with reservations. |
| I’ll stick with it: I’m against, because the disadvantages outweigh for me. |
| We hold different positions, but the arguments are on the table now. |
A model discussion
Question: Sollte man Flugreisen stärker besteuern?
🔊 Listen to the model discussion
Position, argument with evidence, a value judgment, then the floor handed over. Four moves in five sentences.
Explicit reference to what A said, partial agreement, then a counter-argument aimed at a different dimension. This is instruction 2 executed properly.
A concedes, uses the correlative insofern … als*, then extends B’s own logic into a solution. This is the highest-scoring move in the exchange.*
Accepting a good idea while raising a genuine objection. Note that B does not simply repeat their first argument — the discussion has moved.
Instruction 3, executed by both. They started opposed and converged, which is not required but reads well. What matters is that both said explicitly whether they were dafür or dagegen.
Notice what did not happen: nobody delivered a prepared speech, nobody ignored the other, and nobody won.

Look at the phrasing and the pattern is unmistakable: Sollte man …? Sollen …? Ist es sinnvoll …? Every one is a yes-or-no question about a contemporary social choice. You are never asked for expertise, only for a defensible position and the ability to hear another one.
Five mistakes that cost points
Delivering a monologue. The most expensive error. Three prepared arguments with no reference to your partner ignores instruction 2 entirely, however good the German.
Never conceding. Refusing every point makes the discussion static and costs you the concessive structures — zwar … aber, insofern … als, trotzdem — that B2 is listening for.
Repeating your first argument. If you find yourself saying the same thing in different words, the discussion has stopped moving. Pick up something your partner said instead.
Letting your partner take all the time. You are not marked for politeness. Darf ich dazu kurz etwas ergänzen? costs nothing and is expected.
Not closing. Instruction 3 is printed on the sheet. Five minutes end, and if nobody has said dafür or dagegen, both of you have left marks behind.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the discussion? About five minutes for the pair, following the two Vorträge of Teil 1.
Do I have to disagree with my partner? No. You can agree and still score well, as long as you are building on each other’s arguments rather than nodding. What you must not do is agree without adding anything.
What if my partner and I have the same opinion? Take the other side deliberately for a while — Man könnte allerdings einwenden, dass … — or push on the practical difficulties of your shared position. Examiners want to hear argumentation, not consensus.
Can I use the Stichpunkte on the sheet? Yes, they are provided as help. But a candidate who only works through the printed bullets sounds like they are reading a list. Use them as prompts, add your own.
What if I run out of arguments? Ask a question. Was würden Sie jemandem entgegnen, der das Gegenteil behauptet? keeps the discussion alive, buys you thinking time, and counts as interaction.
Is it a problem if we change our minds? The opposite. Shifting position in response to a good argument is exactly what the task is designed to elicit.
