Goethe B2 Sprechen Teil 1: Vortrag halten — Structure, Redemittel, 62 Themen

Teil 1 of the Goethe-Zertifikat B2 Sprechen module puts you at a seminar. You give a short talk, alone, for about four minutes. Then your partner asks you questions about it.
If you have come from B1, forget the five Folien. B2 works differently: Einleitung, Hauptteil, Schluss, structured by three Leitpunkte printed on your task sheet. And those Leitpunkte always follow the same scheme, whatever the topic.
That is the whole trick. Learn the scheme once and every Vortrag becomes the same exercise with different nouns.
This page gives you the skeleton, Redemittel written as complete sentences, a model talk with audio, and all 62 Themen with full worked answers.
How Teil 1 works
| Setting | You are at a seminar (Sie nehmen an einem Seminar teil) |
| Duration | About 4 minutes each, roughly 8 for the pair |
| Preparation | 15 minutes for Teil 1 and Teil 2 together, notes allowed |
| Topic | You choose between Thema 1 and Thema 2 |
| After | Your partner listens and then asks you questions |
Two things candidates miss.
You choose your topic. Two are offered. Decide fast, and decide on the strength of your vocabulary, not on which sounds more intelligent.
The 15 minutes cover both parts. You are preparing your Vortrag and your discussion at the same time. Budget accordingly — roughly ten minutes on the talk, five on the discussion.
The three Leitpunkte
Your task sheet gives you three bullet points. They vary in wording and sometimes in order, but they always ask for the same three moves:
| Leitpunkt | What it asks | Roughly |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Describe several forms, options or alternatives | 60 sec |
| 2 | Describe one of them in more detail | 60 sec |
| 3 | Give advantages and disadvantages, and evaluate them | 90 sec |
Around those three you wrap an Einleitung and a Schluss, about twenty seconds each.
Leitpunkt 3 is where the marks concentrate. Listing is not enough. B2 asks you to weigh them and come down somewhere. A candidate who lists six advantages and six disadvantages, then stops, has answered two thirds of the question.

| Schluss | Zusammenfassend kann man sagen, dass … |
| Vielen Dank für Ihre Aufmerksamkeit. Haben Sie Fragen? |
Two of those deserve underlining. Ein wesentlicher Vorteil besteht darin, dass … is a Nomen-Verb-Verbindung, and the Goethe assessment notes explicitly expect these at B2. Dem steht allerdings gegenüber, dass … gives you inversion and a subordinate clause in one move. Neither is hard, both look deliberate.
Address the room. Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren costs two seconds and immediately signals that you understood the seminar framing rather than reciting into the void.
Redemittel in full sentences
Most B2 lists hand you fragments ending in three dots. Here every line is a sentence you can say as it stands.
Opening and announcing your structure
| German | English |
|---|---|
| Ladies and gentlemen, I’m pleased to be able to speak to you about this topic today. |
| My talk is about the various ways of saving energy in everyday life. |
| I’d like to address three key points: the forms, a concrete example, and the evaluation. |
| The topic concerns us all, because we encounter it almost daily. |
Leitpunkt 1 — presenting several options
| German | English |
|---|---|
| There are basically three options I’d like to present briefly. |
| A first option consists in covering the distance on foot. |
| Alongside that there’s the option of using public transport. |
| Eine weitere, weniger bekannte Form ist … | Another, less well known form is … |
| These three options differ above all in the effort required. |
Leitpunkt 2 — going into detail
| German | English |
|---|---|
| I’d now like to go into the second option in more detail. |
| I consider this option particularly practicable, and for the following reason. |
| Concretely that means investing about twenty minutes a day. |
| From my own experience I can say it’s easier than you think. |
| An example from my own circle illustrates this well. |
Leitpunkt 3 — advantages, disadvantages, evaluation
| German | English |
|---|---|
| Let’s turn now to the advantages and disadvantages of this option. |
| A key advantage is that you save money and time at the same time. |
| On top of that, the effort remains manageable. |
| Against that, however, stands the fact that not everyone has the same circumstances. |
| A further disadvantage that shouldn’t be underestimated is the time it takes. |
| Weighing the two against each other, the advantages clearly outweigh for me. |
| On balance I consider this solution the most sensible. |
The last two lines are the ones that turn a list into an evaluation. Never end Leitpunkt 3 without one of them.
Closing
| German | English |
|---|---|
| To sum up, there are many ways of reaching this goal. |
| My conclusion is that the effort is worth it in any case. |
| Damit bin ich am Ende meines Vortrags. Vielen Dank für Ihre Aufmerksamkeit. | With that I’m at the end of my talk. Thank you for your attention. |
| Gerne beantworte ich jetzt Ihre Fragen. | I’ll gladly take your questions now. |
Handling the questions afterwards
Your partner asks you something once you finish. You cannot prepare the question, but you can prepare the frame.
| German | English |
|---|---|
| Vielen Dank für Ihre Frage. Da muss ich kurz überlegen. | Thank you for your question. I need a moment to think. |
| If I’ve understood you correctly, you’d like to know whether … |
| That’s an aspect I deliberately left out of my talk. |
| In my experience that depends heavily on the situation. |
| That’s hard to answer in general terms, but on balance I’d say … |
Das ist ein Aspekt, den ich bewusst ausgeklammert habe is the most useful sentence on this page. It turns a gap in your talk into a deliberate choice, and it contains a relative clause.
A model Vortrag
Topic: Mehr Bewegung im Alltag — getting more exercise into everyday life. Leitpunkte: Beschreiben Sie mehrere Möglichkeiten · Beschreiben Sie eine Möglichkeit genauer · Nennen Sie Vor- und Nachteile und bewerten Sie diese.
🔊 Listen to the model Vortrag
Three options, each in one clean sentence, then a sentence that groups them. The closing generalisation is what makes it a structured presentation rather than a list.
Concrete numbers, concrete places. Vague detail is the most common weakness at this Leitpunkt.
Two advantages, three disadvantages, then an explicit weighing. Note that the evaluation does not merely pick a side — it explains why the disadvantages weigh less. That is the difference between B1 opinion and B2 evaluation.
Schluss

You will notice several themes marked Variante 1 and Variante 2. Those are two different model answers to the same task — same options, different wording and different arguments. Read both: seeing one task solved two ways teaches more than two tasks solved once.
Using the 15 minutes
The preparation covers Teil 1 and Teil 2. Split it deliberately.
- Choose between Thema 1 and Thema 2 — fast. Pick the one where you can already name three options. Sixty seconds, no more.
- Write your three options as nouns. Not sentences. Treppe · zu Fuß · Fahrrad. That is Leitpunkt 1 done.
- Pick one and write three concrete details. A number, a place, a personal observation. That is Leitpunkt 2.
- Two columns: Vorteile, Nachteile. Two each is enough. Then write one word for your verdict — überwiegen or nicht. That single word saves you at the moment it matters.
- Stop at ten minutes and move to your Teil 2 notes. A perfect Vortrag with no discussion prepared costs you more than a good Vortrag with both ready.
Five mistakes that cost points
Listing instead of evaluating. Leitpunkt 3 says und bewerten Sie diese. Six advantages and six disadvantages with no verdict answers two thirds of the question.
Speaking for two minutes. Four minutes is the target. Under three reads as insufficient range. Three options, one detailed, plus a weighed evaluation naturally fills the time.
Skipping the Einleitung. Diving straight into the options loses the coherence mark and the seminar framing.
Reading aloud. Keywords only. B2 explicitly assesses free speech; a read text is audible within one sentence.
Having nothing left for Teil 2. The most common preparation failure. The clock covers both parts.
Frequently asked questions
How long should the Vortrag be? About four minutes, roughly eight for the pair together. That is the official figure from the Modellsatz.
Do I choose my topic? Yes, between Thema 1 and Thema 2. Choose on vocabulary you already have, not on which topic sounds more impressive.
What is the difference from B1 Teil 2? B1 asks for five Folien including your own experience and your home country. B2 drops both and asks instead for options, one detailed example, and a reasoned evaluation. B2 is analytical where B1 is personal.
Can I use notes? Yes, keywords written during the 15 minutes. Reading full sentences is what costs marks.
What if I run out of things to say? Return to the structure out loud: Kommen wir nun zu den Vor- und Nachteilen. Announcing the next Leitpunkt restarts the talk and sounds deliberate.
Does my partner’s question count towards my mark? Your answer does, and the question you ask them after their talk does too. Listen actively and note one question while they speak.
